General specifications of stainless spring wire

Spring wire typed 1.4310, 1.4568 and 1.4401 is stainless and highly elastic. Therefore, springs out of these materials have the following characteristics:

• Good setting abilities
• High load alternation
• Superb winding ability
• Ni-coated: superb soldering abilities

Surface specifications of stainless spring wire

In general, there are two surface types on stainless spring wire:

1.

Wet drawn
Wet drawn wire is drawn with diamond dies in an oil bath and has a very shine surface. Wet drawn wire is manufactured up to a diameter of 2.00 mm.
We mark this surface finish as polished bright (BR) wire.

2. Powder coated
This wire is drawn dry, without oil, but with powder as lubricant.
We mark this surface finish as coated (S-CO).

In addition, both finish surfaces can be provided with a nickel coating. The nickel coating is provided via galvanization of nickel on pre drawn wire at a certain diameter. This pre drawn wire is drawn resp. reduced further up to its final diameter.

We marke these as nickel-polished (Ni-BR) and nickel-coated (Ni-Co) wire.

Coils or reels: Specifications

Braun Federdraht Vertriebs GmbH offers stainless steel wire in ring or reel packaging.

Reels differentiate not only by weight. The main difference is the reel diameter.
In addition, we offer reelless coils (similar Z2), which are equipped with 300-350 kg of wire. For spooling, two flanshes have to be assembled to the reelless coil.

Rings can be separated into different weight categories ranging from 3-100 kg, according to the diameter.

Annealing at low temperatures

It is advisable to anneal springs made of 1.4310 after production in a furnace by 320° - 350° C (Theoretical annealing temperature is slightly higher).
The annealing time should be around 20 - 30 minutes.
Colors, occurring while annealing can be removed by certain acid solutions. Warning: The wire surface might be effected by this treatment.

The pre-drawn wire was galvanic Nickel plated after the last annealing process and then for the last drawing operation again coated for improved drawing and winding/coiling ability. This is called Ni-Co (Nickel coated)
The Ni-Co surface is prefered for high speed spring production and difficult winding/coiling applications with large or very small Da/d index. In addition the Ni-Coating has a very good ability to prevent mechanical wire surface damage.
NI-BR
WPB
The pre-drawn wire was also galvanic Nickel plated after the last annealing process and submerged in oil bath with diamond dies drawn to its final size. This surface condition is called Ni-Br (Nickel bright).
The Ni-Br wire surface is prefered for small or large spring Da/d index winding and coiling. For in line production of spring winding/coiling and annealing without washing as well as for best automatic Robot Assembly, this surface condition is leading to optimal results.
BR
This wire is not galvanic plated, but submerged in oil drawn with diamond dies to the final size. This surface condition is specified with BR (Bright).
Springs produced from bright wire can have an economic wire price advantage. For medical applications a Nickel plating is often not accepted. The wire and spring surface can be prepared for efficient inline winding/coiling ability. It can be annealed without washing operation and used for Robot Assembly of the springs.
CU-BR
0.08-0.65
The pre-drawn wire was after the last annealing process galvanic Copper plated and then oil submerged with diamond dies drawn to its final size. This surface condition is specified with Cu-Br (Copper Bright).
Mechanical similar springs can be produced for identification reasons with different colours. In addition the Copper plated surface has a very good winding/coiling lubrication.
